Signage & Displays

Canberra International Airport is operated by Capital Airport Group, which bought the airport from the Commonwealth Government's Federal Airports Corporation in 1998. At the time, the airport consisted of the terminal, general aviation precinct and the RAAF Fairbairn base.

The facility has evolved into a multi-modal transport hub, business and retail destination, comprising Brindabella Business Park, Fairbairn and Majura Park commercial office accommodation and Brand Depot.

Screenmakers was contracted to manufacture and install signage for all its car parks. The job involved a series of signs for different locations.

"Blade" road signs indicate the entry points of each car park and provide information on the space available within. Mounting the panels back-to-back on a robust steel frame creates the blade effect. The frame was welded on to base plates and powder-coated in the appropriate airport colour. Each sign is approximately 1.4m x 3m and constructed from 3mm aluminium panels, pre-cut in the pointy shape and with openings cut out for the digital readouts. Internal fittings are welded inside to house the LED units and the removable middle layer. The three layers were installed on a prefabricated concrete plinth with concealed starter bolts.

Graphics were direct printed on to a panel pre-coated in polyurethane paint, then covered in a clear anti-graffiti finish. Although graffiti isn't a problem in this particular area, the airport uses a greywater irrigation sprinkler system that leaves a residue on the signs, so the coating provides ease of cleaning. 

The overhead lower deck signs are 8m x 300mm, and consist of graphic panels with digital readouts displaying the car park conditions. The signs are single-sided with a steel framework and bolted directly on to the concrete slab.

The small Conditions of Entry signs were installed next to the boom gate and the pay machines. They were attached to the post with a specially manufactured bracket then stainless steel strap-mounted to the post.

All the signs were made from 3mm aluminium panels with cut-outs as required, spray-painted in the airport colours with a clear anti-graffiti coating.
